Cross-Stitched Peacock Inspired by Birds Found Within the Palazzo Chigi

Bird imagery is prevalent throughout the Palazzo Chigi in Ariccia, reflecting the family's fascination with birds as symbols of status, wonder, and control over nature. In the 16th and 17th centuries, exotic birds were luxury items: rare and costly, tied to global trade networks. Their presence signified wealth, curiosity, and cosmopolitan taste.

Behind the palace, the Chigi maintained a large aviary within a wooded landscape, with stone arches supporting netting that enclosed exotic birds, transforming the garden into a living spectacle.

Inside the palace, birds are prominently featured in painted decorations. The Summer Dining Room showcases painted birds against an illusionistic sky ceiling, creating the sensation of dining outdoors. Additional bird imagery appears in the Cardinal’s Apartments alongside astrological and zodiac motifs, reflecting Cardinal Flavio Chigi’s intellectual interests.

The peacock, long a symbol of beauty, abundance, and display, signified control over luxury and ornament in aristocratic contexts. The painted peacocks within the Chigi Palace embody this symbolic richness, aligning with the family’s broader interest in spectacle, nature, and intellectual systems of order. The peacock was initially created as a hand cross-stitched work inspired by the palace’s imagery, representing all peacocks rather than a direct translation of any single bird. The background symbolizes the various spaces in the palace where birds might be found, notably in the Summer Dining Room and Cardinal’s Apartments.

The bird’s layered feathers and radial symmetry suited the structured logic of stitching, translating painted ornament into counted thread and pattern. After completion, the stitched peacock was digitally reconstructed in the Adobe Creative Suite, with each element separated into individual vector layers (shown on the right). This process preserved the labor of the original work while transforming it into a flexible digital object. The peacock was digitally re-stitched, with each cross-stitch “X” replicated in the Adobe Creative Suite. The exploded layers in the images reveal the details of each segment, assisting in the creation of the 3D version of the peacock accessible via a QR code (also in the images).
