Wallcovering Translations

Wallcovering Translations is a contemporary wall panel project that brings together old-world craftsmanship and emerging technology. Cross-stitching has long been part of the story of interiors, adding texture, pattern, and meaning to the spaces we inhabit. This project re-imagines that tradition by pairing hand-stitching with 3D printing and laser cutting. The result is a series of modular panels that honor the tactile beauty of needlework while expanding where and how it can live within modern interiors.

 

The process began with designing a stitchable 3D-printed surface that could mimic the familiar grid of traditional embroidery fabric while remaining strong and durable. After extensive prototyping, a custom panel was developed and hand-stitched with patterns inspired by historic leather wall coverings, wall paintings, and a clergy vestment from a Bernini-designed palace in central Italy. Each stitched panel reflects the colors and character of a different motif, interpreted rather than copied. By combining the precision of digital fabrication with the warmth of handcraft and natural materials, Wallcovering Translations offers a fresh way to carry forward a time-honored tradition.
