The Antechamber

​This cross-stitched panel was inspired by the hand-stamped leather wall covering pattern in the Antechamber, which is located in the Piano Nobile Suite on the ground floor of the Palazzo Chigi. This room functioned as both an Antechamber and a studio for the Chigi clergyman, as well as for the subsequent Cardinals, including Ludovico Chigi, the last to occupy it. Its notable leather wall coverings, decorated with a gold oak leaf pattern set against a deep red background, clearly reflect Bernini’s stylistic influence. The oak leaves in the pattern represent the Chigi family. These hangings were originally from the Palazzo Chigi ai Santi Apostoli, designed by Bernini for the Cardinal, and were brought to Ariccia sometime after 1693.
